The Thrill of it All
Let’s just cut to the chase. I am not capable of writing an introduction worthy of this man. This week’s Friday Fave is the one, the only, Sam Smith.
I started listening to Sam Smith in high school. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I was kind of ahead on the whole Sam Smith movement. I knew every word to every song, and I blasted his music at any moment I could. Just ask my mom. She can confirm my obsession. She was SO over Sam Smith. He has one of those voices that only comes around every once in awhile. For me, he falls into the same category as Adele, Frank Ocean (a la Thinkin Bout You), James Blake, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). Not only do they have the most angelic voices, but also lyrics that move you beyond measure.
I swear, I think Sam Smith is inside of my head. It never fails, every time I go through a serious breakup, he’s locked and loaded with the perfect cry-until-your-eyes-won’t-open ballads. When my high school boyfriend and I broke up, In The Lonely Hour was there for me, and trust me, I played it on repeat. I mean, we were only together for like 7 months, but I was devastated, and good ol’ Sammy got me (Sam Smith, not my ex that coincidentally has the same. damn. name.). Here we are 4 years and another breakup later, and BAM! Sam had me in mind again, and released The Thrill of it All at just the right time. For clarification, please note that my recent breakup did NOT end the same way as Sam Smith’s, and his new album is in no way a reflection of my relationship. With that being said, Every. Single. Song. on the album is a solid 10/10, but if I had to choose 2 faves, I would have to pick Palace and Nothing Left for You. I seriously recommend giving the album a good listen. Just make sure you have a box of tissues nearby.
Also, it's absolutely necessary for us to take a minute to talk about his glo up. I mean, come on. Have you seen him?! He looks amazing, and he's wayyyy better off in his new relationship. Let's all cheers to Sam Smith, glo ups, relationships that (hopefully) last, and the freakin weekend!!!
For anyone out there thinking about buying me a Christmas or Hanukkah present, tickets to the Sam Smith concert at MSG next summer is like super high up on my wish list.
Anyway, my weekend assignment for you is to go listen to Sam Smith’s new album, The Thrill of it All. After you give it a listen, comment below, and let me know which song you like best.
xoxo,
Zoey Leigh
